lifeguarding

I have been a lifeguard for the past 2 years. I would describe lifeguarding as a relativity easy but brain-numbing(ly) boring job. You can only ref so many pick up games of sharks and minnows and rate so many poorly executed dives. The first hour or so of a shift isn’t bad but as the day goes on and the sun’s heat radiates, the 15 minute station rotations seem to grow in length.

I rule high on my stand and for the first time in my life I recognize that I wish time would move faster. What a disturbing realization this is for me, as I like many fear the impending idea of “wasted time”. The idea that one day I may wake up and think “Where did all the time go?” Yet I continue to sit on my throne overlooking my glorified babysitting job and wish for it to leave.
